Travel for the Music: 6 Destinations Every Live Music Lover Should Experience

Music has always been a huge part of my life.

My husband and I actually fell in love over our shared love of live music. We may have very different tastes (his playlists and mine often do not overlap), but we’ve always agreed on one thing: there’s nothing quite like the energy of hearing music performed live.

Before we had kids, music festivals often determined where we traveled. We’d plan weekends and vacations around lineups we couldn’t miss, discovering new cities along the way. While our travels look a little different these days, we still make it a point to seek out live music.

Research shows that music can reduce stress, lower cortisol, boost dopamine, improve memory, and create stronger emotional connections. Maybe that’s why some of my favorite memories involve discovering an incredible local band, wandering into a tiny venue, or ending the evening with a room full of strangers singing every word to the same song.

If you’re looking for a different way to plan your next trip, let the music guide you.

Dublin, Ireland
If your idea of the perfect evening is a pint in hand and a lively pub, Dublin delivers. Traditional Irish music pours from pubs where talented musicians often have the entire room singing together before the night is over.

Glasgow, Scotland
Designated a UNESCO City of Music, Glasgow has one of the UK’s most dynamic live music scenes. Legendary venues like King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut helped launch bands like Oasis, Blur, and Radiohead, while the historic Barrowland Ballroom continues to host world-class acts alongside local talent.

Barcelona, Spain
Music spills into everyday life here. Flamenco performances showcase Spain’s passion and artistry, while jazz clubs, street musicians, and lively plazas invite you to stop, listen, and soak in the atmosphere.

Havana, Cuba
Another UNESCO City of Music, Havana is a celebration of rhythm. Influenced by Spanish, African, Caribbean, and American traditions, you’ll find son Cubano, salsa, rumba, and jazz everywhere: from intimate clubs to neighborhood streets where dancing often starts spontaneously.

Melbourne, Australia
Australia’s live music capital offers everything from gritty underground rock clubs to indie, funk, jazz, and pop. It’s also a pilgrimage for AC/DC fans, who can visit ACDC Lane and some of the venues that shaped Australia’s legendary rock scene.

And if you don’t want to travel too far from home, here in the United States:

Nashville, Tennessee
Music City is about far more than country music. Spend an evening at a songwriter round listening to the stories behind hit songs, catch an emerging artist before they make it big, or enjoy live performances in venues ranging from historic concert halls to neighborhood listening rooms.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or your next big adventure, consider choosing a destination known for its music. You might discover a new favorite artist, dance with locals, or simply create memories that you’ll relive every time you hear a certain song.
